Released in 2018, "The Nun" is a supernatural horror movie that explores the origins of the demonic entity first introduced in "The Conjuring 2." The film takes place in 1952 and follows a young novitiate named Sister Irene and a priest named Father Burke as they investigate the mysterious death of a nun at an isolated abbey in Romania.

The opening scene of the movie is particularly striking, as it features a group of nuns who are attacked by an unseen force while performing a ritual to keep the demon Valak at bay. This sets the tone for the rest of the film, which is filled with eerie and unsettling moments.

One of the strengths of "The Nun" is its atmosphere. The setting of the abbey is claustrophobic and oppressive, with dimly lit corridors, dark crypts, and decaying statues. The sound design also adds to the sense of unease, with ominous whispers, creaking doors, and sudden jolts of music. Director Corin Hardy does a great job of creating a sense of dread and foreboding throughout the film.

The performances in "The Nun" are also noteworthy. Taissa Farmiga, who plays Sister Irene, brings a vulnerability and earnestness to her role that makes her character easy to root for. Demián Bichir, as Father Burke, is suitably gruff and determined, with a hidden vulnerability of his own. And Jonas Bloquet, who plays the comic relief character Frenchie, injects some much-needed levity into the proceedings.

However, the standout performance in "The Nun" is undoubtedly that of Bonnie Aarons as the titular character. Aarons first played the demon Valak in "The Conjuring 2," but in "The Nun" she is given more screen time and a more prominent role. Her appearance is truly unsettling, with her ghostly white face, piercing yellow eyes, and flowing black habit. Aarons does a fantastic job of conveying the otherworldly nature of the character, with her movements and mannerisms feeling almost inhuman.

Unfortunately, "The Nun" is not without its flaws. The plot is fairly thin and predictable, with the characters following a standard horror movie formula of investigating a creepy location and slowly uncovering its dark secrets. The dialogue can also be a bit clunky at times, with characters frequently delivering exposition in an awkward and stilted way.

Additionally, some viewers may find the movie's portrayal of nuns and the Catholic Church to be problematic. While the film does not explicitly criticize or condemn Catholicism, it does feature some unsettling imagery that could be seen as disrespectful to the religion. Some have also criticized the movie's depiction of nuns as being overly sexualized, with some scenes featuring nuns in low-cut habits and provocative poses.

Despite these issues, "The Nun" is an effective horror movie that delivers plenty of scares and thrills. It may not be the most original or groundbreaking film in the genre, but it is a solid entry that will likely satisfy fans of "The Conjuring" franchise and horror fans in general. The film's stunning visuals, chilling atmosphere, and standout performances make it a memorable and enjoyable experience, even if it is not without its flaws.

Overall, "The Nun" is a successful addition to the "Conjuring" universe, providing a creepy and entertaining origin story for one of the franchise's most memorable villains. While it may not be a cinematic masterpiece, it is a solid horror movie that is well worth watching for fans of the genre. Just be prepared for plenty of jump scares, creepy imagery, and a few unsettling moments along the way.
